How does military life in South Korea today compare to military life during the Korean War?

American troops are currently serving in South Korea.  They are creating memories that will someday be told to their sons and daughters.  We do not want their service to our country forgotten.  Your task is to interview veterans who served during the Korean War in the 1950s and soldiers posted in South Korea today.  You will compile the information you gather, write a report, and make a power point presentation honoring these brave Americans.

  1. You will be assigned to a team of 3 or 4 students.
  2. Each team will research the Korean War in the Library of Congress and listen to 3 interviews by Korean veterans.
    Team one:  open
the Marine History Fact Sheets to research the history of marines in Korean War.

Listen to interviews with Korean veterans by opening:

                                          Boris Spiroff

                                          Bertran Wallace

Team six: open  the Army Nurses History Fact Sheet & the Coast Guard History Fact Sheet to research the history of army nurses and the Coast Guard in Korean War.

Listen to interviews with Korean veterans by opening:

                                  Catherine Neville

                                         Dorothy W. Cutt

                                         Earl Hufford

3.  After listening to your interviews in the Library of Congress, each group will develop 10 questions they would like to ask the Veterans.

4.  Now join with another group so that there are now 3 groups of 6 to 8 students.  Read your questions and decide which 5 of the ten you have are the best questions to ask the veterans.

5.  Next, join these 3 large groups into one class group.  Present your 5 best questions for a total of 15.  As a group, choose the best 10 questions to ask the veterans. If too many questions were repetitive, brainstorm as a whole group with teacher input.

6.  Break down into the original team of 3 to 4 students.  Each group will join with one veteran who has been invited to class by your teacher.  Within your group, take turns asking questions of your veteran.  Record their answers using digital recorders borrowed from Waynesburg University.

7.  Each team will use the Internet to correspond with a soldier currently stationed in South Korea.  Again, take turns typing in same questions asked of the veterans.  Print copy of the interview when completed.

8.  Each group will compare answers given by veterans and soldiers using a Venn diagram http://www.readingquest.org/pdf/venn2.pdf

       9.  Using Four Square, each group will write a five paragraph essay comparing military life today
in South Korea to life during the Korean War.
